Mineral Point Gallery Night and Candlelight Shopping
Saturday, December 6, 2008, 5-9 PM

Mineral Point’s December 2008 Gallery Night will be held on Saturday, December 6th. At least 15 galleries will stay open with a reception during extended hours from 5 until 9 PM. Many will be featuring new items, holiday products, and special exhibitions.

Gallery Night, a city-wide celebration of art, is an event that focuses on one of the key elements that distinguish this small city – the creative community. Here, artists and gallery owners offer a remarkable assortment of fine art and quality hand-made craft. You will find basketry, ceramics, collage, furniture, glass, jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, weaving, and woodworking – much of it made right in town. Most of the galleries are located in the compact downtown business district. With its historic architecture, delicious dining venues, and engaging gallerists, walking from place to place on Gallery Night gives visitors the authentic Mineral Point experience.

December 6th is also Mineral Point’s annual Candlelight Shopping event. Most stores will join the galleries in staying open until 9 pm, and many will have treats for holiday shoppers. Hundreds of sparkling luminaria will line High and Commerce streets. Chestnuts roasting, hot cocoa, and holiday music enhance the festive ambiance. It’s a world away from typical holiday shopping … peaceful, friendly, charming … a step back in time.

Glass balls, marbles, plates and a felted duck - Sirius Sunlight Glass Studio

Sirius Sunlight Glass Studio (218 High Street - 608-987-2716). Sirius Sunlight Glass Studio will once again turn down the gallery lights to take the "Candlelight Shopping" theme quite literally as dozens of colorful glass candles burn brightly, bringing you that special warmth and glow of the holiday season. The studio will be filled with stained glass creations by Jill Engels and handmade art marbles and ornaments by Chuck Pound, as well as his sparkling glass icicles which have become a traditional part of Christmas in Mineral Point. Also look for the return of a special selection of darling little felted wool wild birds and other ornaments by Jill's sister, Raven OKeefe.

Painting by Anne Von Ehr

The Bohlin Gallery (22 High Street – 608-987-5444) will be presenting the colorful, lush, and loose painting of Anne Von Ehr, who has always been involved in the arts. In addition to teaching art, Anne worked as an interior designer for many years. Now Anne creates organic, lyrical works in acrylics and oil pastels, but notes “The first time I touched pastels to paper I felt a connection. The immediacy and soft glowing colors drew me to this medium. It has become my mainstay.” Philosophically, Anne comments: “I have accepted that each painting represents where I am now. New artistic direction builds upon and enhances every painting I do. There is no end to this journey, and for that I am grateful.” In addition to Anne’s artworks, the Bohlin Gallery shows a significant collection of fine American traditional and contemporary arts and crafts.

A number of area restaurants will extend their hours to allow gallery goers an opportunity to enjoy both art and dining that evening.

Maps identifying the participating galleries and restaurants will be available at most galleries. Click here to print a map of participating galleries.
