The Mineral Point Room of Local history, tucked in the basement
of the Mineral Point Public Library, is one of our most valuable
treasures. Barred windows are reminders that this once housed the
city jail. The collection of materials includes books, maps, photographs,
newspaper files, letters and other documents pertaining to the
history of Mineral Point and the region. Information about mining,
the railroad, local involvement in the Civil War, industrial and
business development, land records and genealogical records are
available. The collection was originated with a generous donation
of materials from Robert Neal in 1981. Personal papers include
a series of letters between President Woodrow Wilson and his friend,
David Jones, a Mineral Pointer. Betty White, actress and wife of
another native son, Allen Ludden, has donated some of her husband’s
papers to the collection. A state of the art microfilm reader-printer
was added in 2004, thanks to a generous bequest from the estate
of Gordon H. Shepard. A vast collection of historic architectural
photos is available for viewing, thanks to the generosity of Dean
Conners. The Archives is open: Sat., 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and
Thurs., 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.(From May through October, it adds
hours on Thurs. evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) For more information,
