You can learn a great deal about Wisconsin history with a trip to Mineral Point. Take a tour at Pendarvis and learn about early immigration and mining. A stop at the Mineral Point Railroad Depot Museum will take you back to the days when the railroad was the lifeblood of commerce. Spend some time at Orchard Lawn and discover the elegant lifestyle of a 19th century merchant family.
Step on guided tours for bus groups are available through the Chamber of Commerce. And ask about self-guided tours too.
While spending time downtown, inquire with shop owners about our Mortar & memories project. When word got out in 2007 that Mineral Point had been selected as one America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations, there was lots of excitement in town. One of the ways we chose to celebrate this honor was a project that would document the rich architectural history that is ours to preserve. Mortar & Memories was born.
The Chamber of Commerce and the Mineral Point Historical Society compiled photos (late 1800s, early 1970s, 2009) and architectural histories of each downtown building. You will find a binder in every downtown building – and we invite you to add to the memories by writing your own stories about the buildings. Did you celebrate a special occasion there? Was it a favorite hangout from childhood? Do you have a fond memory from a trip to Mineral Point? Tell us anything that you recall about the building or activities and people associated with it. In doing so, we will leave a legacy for generations to come by making sure these walls really do talk.
