APRIL 2010:
the curtain rises for the grand re-opening of the Mineral Point Opera House.
Dedicated in 1915 as the “Theater for All the
People,” that description still holds true. Built in 1914, it is
one of a disappearing breed of small town cultural centers. Claude and
Stark, an influential Madison architectural firm, designed a vaudeville
house that in its early days attracted touring artists who presented
first class entertainment to an enthusiastic community. With
a balcony and two boxes, the auditorium originally seated over
700 spectators who were treated to live drama, grand opera and
symphonic music.
An equally enthusiastic community has watched as this
magnificent old theater has recently been restored to its original
grandeur. New electric, plumbing, fire protection, restored
plasterwork, and decorative arts painting have breathed new life into
our Opera House. This amazing transformation, led by a
dedicated group of community volunteers, has been made possible with
generous private contributions and support from the City. And now, that
it’s even more beautiful than ever, we are pleased to open the
doors again and welcome you back for movies, film festivals, live music
and theater.
For nearly a century, we have watched movies on the big
screen and have delighted in the local talents of the Shake Rag
Players, the Theater of Ballet Arts, the Mineral Point Schools and
numerous musicians. The Mineral Point Film Society, a group of
film-lovers, brings significant world cinema to the area. Ninety-five
years and better than ever, the Mineral Point Opera House is on its way
to being a regional performing arts center.
